    How many Fire Extinguishers do I need for my premises?

    This is impossible to say without a Fire Risk Assessment. It depends on your premises, people and risks. The types, ratings and quantities of Extinguishers will be identified as part of your FRA.

    Which type of Fire Extinguisher do I need for my business?

    Which type depends on your Fire Risk Assessment and your business itself.

    For instance, the versatility of a powder Extinguisher - solids, flammable liquids and gases, electrical fires - makes it a popular choice. But, if your business involves catering or clothing... watch out, it leaves an almighty mess.

    So CO2 might be a better choice in combination with a water or foam Extinguisher. This is where expertise and experience are worth their weight in gold.

    Do I really need to have my Extinguishers maintained?

    Oh yes. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (2005) requires that they are serviced by a Competent Person. That's where we step in. 

    Besides, you’d like to be confident that they’d work if you ever needed to use them. Regular servicing ensures they will.

    What happens on a service visit?

    We will check several things such as (but not limited to):
    • Ensuring the tamper pin is in place. This holds the safety pin in place, and lets you easily identify if the Extinguisher has been used.
    • Checking the pressure gauge - this indicates if the Fire Extinguisher is fully pressurised. But it's not foolproof, sometimes the needle can ‘stick’. Giving a false reading. It could look fine but the Extinguisher may be completely depressurized. And useless. We won't let that happen. We'll check that the Extinguishers are charged with the appropriate amount and type of extinguishing agent.
    • Inspecting the Extinguisher body for evidence of corrosion and damage. A damaged or corroded Extinguisher can pose a huge safety risk.
    • Your Fire Extinguishers also need to display a label which will give information about its operation, ratings, refilling and anything else worthy of note. If any of this text is no longer legible, then the Extinguisher will usually need to be condemned.
    • Checking the Extinguisher hose and seals for any damage, tears or fraying to ensure it will work effectively.
    • Ensuring signage is correct, compliant and legible. Ensuring Extinguishers remain in the correct locations.
    • Ensuring your Extinguishers remain adequate for the risks specific to your building.

    Do we really need training to use an Extinguisher?

    "Surely I just point, pull the pin and squeeze..."

    Sadly it is not quite so simple. You need to know which Extinguisher to use on which types of fire and how to most effectively use them.

    What happens when our Fire Extinguishers stop working as they should?

    Fire Extinguishers are more than just a red canister filled with water. They have components that wear out. Extinguishing agents that expire over time. Seals that deteriorate and become weak spots.

    These units present a risk. As explained above they may be dangerous. But let's not forget, somebody may try to tackle a fire only to find that your old Extinguisher won’t work adequately. That will put him/her at risk…

    Tell me about British Standard 5306?

    British Standard 5306 (BS 5306) is a comprehensive set of guidelines for Fire Extinguishing installations and equipment on premises. This is the standard all Fire Protection companies must work to. And, of course, at Armoury, we do.

    Some important things to consider:
    • Responsible Person: Defined as the individual or entity responsible for Fire Safety provisions in the premises.
    • Competent Person: An individual with the necessary training and experience to perform Extinguisher maintenance.
    • Evaluation of Fitness: Extinguishers found to be defective must be categorised as "Condemned" or "Corrective Action Required".
    • Component Replacement: Only components supplied or specified by the manufacturer should be used
    BS 5306 works in conjunction with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to form a comprehensive approach to Fire Safety management in the UK.
